Fire alarms and Safety
Fire safety is very important to anyone who owns a home or apartment building, anyone who lives in one, and anyone driving a car. Smokey the Bear has been stressing fire safety outdoors for over fifty years, but some of the worst fires are at home and on the road, places that can easily store a fire extinguisher or two. There are many things that can spark a fire, an electric cord overloaded with computer and sound equipment for example, but a spark doesn’t have to grow and consume the house. Simple fire safety equipment such as working smoke detectors and knowing a fire safety plan such as where all the exits are can greatly reduce the chance of injury or death.
Many people don’t realize the importance of a car fire extinguisher. Cars are one of the leading killers, especially in America where driving everywhere is normal. If a person is trapped inside a vehicle it is important that they are safe from fire. Even if the driver and passengers can get out the fire needs to be put out as soon as possible to prevent further risks to everyone in the area. Fire departments are fast to respond, but fire is much faster to consume. With easy access to a portable fire extinguisher any small fire can be put out before it gets out of hand.
One of the most important places in the home is the kitchen, but it is also the most dangerous room for fires. A kitchen fire extinguisher should be placed in an area where it can be quickly and easily accessed. A grease fire can flare up at any moment and they are known to spread very quickly because of their high heat. A non-flammable cloth can be thrown over the pan to smother the fire if its caught quickly, but often an extinguisher comes in more useful albeit harder to clean up. It is not harder to clean up than a burnt down kitchen however, and much cheaper.
Fire extinguisher cabinets are a great place to store these safety devices as long as they are clearly labeled, and if glass must be broken to access it, a piece of metal or small hammer should be attached to a string. Fire extinguisher inspection can be done by trained firefighters and the manufacturers of the extinguisher. Fire departments can provide a fire extinguisher recharge for a small fee, and many departments provide this fire extinguisher service for free. Some fire extinguisher equipment can aid in their use, such as a harness for a large industrial fire extinguisher so it can be easily worn like a backpack.
Fire extinguishers are easy to use, simply pull the pin, aim the nozzle and squeeze the handle to spray a thick fire choking material at the base of the flames. Most are only one time use, so must be recharged after every use. It is a good idea to have multiple extinguishers available just in case. .
